A Day of Blessings: Ironman Philippines

Image
The week before I worked on remaining calm and focused, hydrated, well rested and acclimated to the heat and humidity. It was a good week. I was ready.           Swim- Goal 1:45 (1h45m) and :52 at the hallway point; Actual 1:46, :50 halfway I was abnormally   calm and collected race morning. The waters were calm which reassured me. The night before there was a storm making the water really choppy. I headed to my start corral and they played Bocelli’s Prayer. I LOVE Andreas Bocelli! Wow! It is going to be a good day. I saw Liam on the way and he tells me “You got this!” I do! I really do! Next comes the Philippine National Anthem. A man was waving a giant flag beachside and it was beautiful. Such an honor. It gave me chills. I enter the start corral to a fully robed Catholic Priest blessing all of us with holy water. I stopped for it, took it all in and said a Hail Mary. I saw friends and stayed with them. Allen had been ...

Ironman 3- Journey to the Philippines: My Father

Ironman #3, Subic Bay, Philippines coming up in June 2018. Not just another Ironman, this one is far different. They all are but this one really is. After my last Ironman I felt like I was finished, complete. Happy to stick with 70.3 distance races. But I was already registered for IM Philippines. For me at the time that would be the hardest race for me. I would have to address my fears and train harder than ever to endure the heat and humidity. Really, it’s going to suck. No sugarcoating. I know I can do it but why? Why would I? I already know I can go well above and beyond my perceived physical and mental abilities. I already know I am strong. I have nothing to prove. I am driven by something bigger. Something I really cannot identify at this point. I am driven by my father. I am driven by my Filipino brothers who I never met in person. All 3 have passed on. My father passed from lung cancer 12 days before my 16 th birthday. My oldest brother, Arthur passed in 2011 and...

Training for and completing an Ironman is never a solo endeavor. I would not have done this without the support of my family and friends. Thank you to my family near and far: James Field (for always listening to my processing, feeding   me, pumping my tires, ordering my tires and tubes, always asking me how my workout went, reassuring me that I could in fact do this, driving the kids everywhere, worrying for me about logistics on race day and running nearly every long run with me on the weekend when you could be sleeping in.), my kiddos Luna, Liam, Byron and Codi;   my sister Allison; nieces Valerie (for always being there at the swim start to make sure I get my butt in that water!) and   Kyrie (for always being there the day before, you are always so centering); nephew Leo, great niece Emily, sister-in-law Sherri; my awesome step- mom, Joan; and my incredible mother-in-law and father-in law Karen and Darwin. Thank you dear friends: Coach Julie Dunkle (for so much more...
